Senate Passes Drug Compounding Bill
Published at(WASHINGTON) — The Senate passed a bill by voice vote on Monday to expand the Food and Drug Administration’s ability to regulate drug compounding pharmacies, which mix and create tailored-made medications for patients.
The bill, called the Drug Quality and Security Act, was introduced by Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., in response to a fungal meningitis outbreak that killed 64 people after a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy distributed contaminated medication.
The bill passed the House of Representatives in September and will now head to President Obama for a signature.
