(NEW YORK) — Former San Diego Padres bench coach Rick Renteria will be hired as the Chicago Cubs new manager, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The Tribune reports Renteria has agreed upon a three-year contract and will be introduced to the media Thursday via teleconference.
Renteria has been a major league coach since 2008, and the bench coach of the Padres since 2011.
The 51-year-old Renteria beat out Dave Martinez, Eric Wedge, A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta for the job.
Renteria, a former infielder, was drafted in the first round of the 1980 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He played five major league seasons split between the Pirates, Mariners and Marlins.
