Texas A&M Agrees to Contract Extension with Kevin Sumlin

Getty Footballs?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1385849921892Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — With all the rumored interest of Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin from various college and NFL teams, the team’ announced they’ve given him a six-year extension.

Since becoming the head coach at Texas A&M prior to the 2012 season, Sumlin has enjoyed a successful tenure there so along with quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Sumlin had been linked to the vacant USC job and was generating interest among NFL teams, but Sumlin will be sticking around College Station for the foreseeable future.

“Coach Sumlin has demonstrated why he is considered among the nation’s elite football coaches,” athletic director Eric Hyman said in a statement released by the school. “His coaching and recruiting abilities are only secondary to his integrity, class and passion for his student-athletes and this university. Texas A&M is making a sincere commitment to Kevin.”

Sumlin has gone 54-22 in his coaching career entering Saturday. He’s gone 19-5 since taking over at Texas A&M.

The new deal will keep Sumlin under contract till the 2019 season.
