Two Dead in World Cup Stadium Collapse

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1385591626842Michael Dodge/Getty Images(SAO PAULO, Brazil) — At least two people are dead after part of the stadium that will host the World Cup Opener in 2014 collapsed on Wednesday. Local media also reported that a third victim was hospitalized in serious condition.

The accident, which occured during lunchtime when many workers were not on site, was the result of a crane collapsing on top of the metal structure. Some seats on the east side of Itaquerao Stadium while the crane also crashed into the large LED panel that sits on the facade of the venue. FIFA has set a deadline of Dec. 12 for all World Cup sites to be completed.

Along with the opener, Itaquerao Stadium is scheduled to host five other matches during the World Cup including a semifinal. The 70,000 seat stadium, which cost almost $360 million to build, holds 20,000 temporary seats that will be used only for the World Cup.
