The two were originally believed to have been armed.

“We recovered what appeared to be long rifles but in actuality more than likely are probably BB guns,” Denver Police Chief Robert White said at a news conference Tuesday morning.

SWAT teams responded to Noel Middle School after the suspects were spotted by a school janitor Monday night, ABC News affiliate KMGH reported.

Police alerted the neighborhood to remain indoors as the situation unfolded, Denver Police Sgt. Steve Warneke told ABC News at the time.  No evacuations took place.

White said the suspects, who have not been identified, were not students at the school.  Their motive appears to have been burglary.

“It also appears the individuals ransacked several rooms and preliminarily the intent appears to be burglary,” the police chief said.

Along with guns, police also recovered the suspects’ backpacks.

“It appears there is a computer in one of the backpacks.  The other one we’re not sure,” White said.

The middle school is scheduled to be open for classes on Tuesday.
