“There have been two U.S. citizen deaths in the Philippines,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters at Tuesday’s briefing.  “The number may change as we receive additional information. The U.S. Embassy in Manila is providing consular assistance to the families of the deceased. Out of the respect of the families, we are not, of course, providing details.”

The State Department is working with the U.S. military personnel in the Philippines to check on Americans it knows are in the country, Psaki said, but as a matter of policy the State Department does not disclose how many requests for help it’s received.

The U.S. announced it will supply $20 million in aid to the Philippines – emergency shelter supplies, hygiene kits, and emergency food bars and pastes. The first of many shipments arrived earlier Tuesday from an emergency warehouse in Dubai, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is coordinating with American military personnel in the Philippines on how to distribute it.
