Installing one of the devices costs $10,000.

After receiving complaints on a regular basis about the smelly elevators, MARTA’s Tom Beebe says they went to the Internet to find a solution.

“We did a search for a urine detection device, and I was thinking, ‘I wonder if there’s somebody that’s created something like that,’ and sure enough it did, and it pops up over in Europe — an English company in the United Kingdom,” Beebe said.

The warmth of the urine activates the device, sounds an alarm and drops the elevator to the ground floor, where an officer has been notified to make the arrest. If MARTA deems the UDD’s a success, they’ll consider installing them in about 90 elevators across the city.

So far, one person has been arrested.
