The announcement at the New York Police Department graduation ceremony highlighted a 20 percent reduction in murder numbers from 2012, and a 50 percent drop since 2001. There have been 332 homicides in 2013, according to a Bloomberg administration statement. The number of shootings has fallen 20 percent from last year as well, with 1,093 shootings through Dec. 26.

“New York’s crime-fighting strategies have made us America’s safest big city — and one that cities across the globe want to learn from,” Bloomberg said. “Twelve years ago, no one thought New York’s crime rate could go any lower.”

The administration highlighted the drop in murders amid the growth of the city’s population.
