Bloomberg Touts Legacy, Highlights Crime Rates
Published at(NEW YORK) — Outgoing New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will highlight his administration’s crime-fighting record Thursday and Friday, continuing a citywide tour discussing his administration’s successes.
His farewell tour across the five boroughs included ribbon-cutting ceremonies, school tours and riding on a new subway extension.
Under the Bloomberg administration, New York City’s crime rate went down 32 percent compared to 2001, and the murder rate decreased by 49 percent, according to a city hall official.
In addition, the New York City incarceration rate has dropped by 36 percent over the last 12 years. The decrease is partly attributed to changes in probation programs, the expanded use of felony drug courts and alternative-to-incarceration programs.
