Colorado Teen Shot Dead by Stepfather in Apparent Mistaken Identity

iStock/Thinkstock(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.) -- A Colorado teen is dead after being shot at home by her stepfather in an apparent case of mistaken identity, police say.

Colorado Springs Police are saying the shooting looks like just a tragic accident. The stepfather apparently believed he was dealing with a burglar breaking into the house when he opened fire on his 14-year-old stepdaughter. The girl died later at a hospital.

It's unclear what circumstances led to the shooting. The Colorado Springs district attorney and investigators are all looking into it to see if it was truly an accident or whether criminal charges may need to be filed.
