Officer Elias Montoya was terminated effective Friday in relation to an Oct. 28 incident when he assisted in pulling over 39-year-old Oriana Ferrell for speeding.

Ferrell had been taking her children on a trip to the Rio Grande. Police dashboard video showed the woman and an officer arguing, and after he returned to his car to check paperwork, the mother drove away.

The officer pulled her over again, opening her door and demanding she get out from the car. After she refused, he tried to pull her out of the vehicle as her five children began to scream. As Ferrell made a third attempt to flee, Montoya shot at the minivan.

The mother and one of her sons were later arrested.
