Under Feaster, the Flames were unable to reach the playoffs in his first two full seasons on the job.

Through 31 games this season, the Flames are 12-15-4. Only the Edmonton Oilers have a worse record in the Western Conference. Overall, the Flames have the fifth worst record in the NHL.

Brian Burke, the Flames’ president of hockey operations, says the move was motivated by the team’s need to get back to contention.

“I wouldn’t have come here if that wasn’t the ultimate goal,” Burke said.  “I have to look at the steps that have been taken and figure out what’s the best way for us to get on that path. And I reached the conclusion that we needed to make this change.”

The team also let go of assistant general manager John Weisbrod.
