According to the BBC News, the Americans were arrested near Sabratha, a city west of Tripoli. Images were posted online to show two of the Americans’ passports and embassy identification cards.

The Americans were reportedly armed and carrying communications equipment as they were reviewing evacuation routes for embassy staff, the BBC News reports. U.S. officials said that the four were released just about one hour later.

American diplomats have been operating under tight security since last year’s attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
