(RIGBY, ID)  —  Reduced visibility caused by blowing dust has closed Interstate 15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts, the Idaho Transportation Department announced.

I-15 closed from milepost 119 to 135 at 9:17 p.m. today (Monday, December 2).

Northbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to U.S. 20 in Idaho Falls and then from U.S. 20 in Rigby to Idaho 48, which runs to Roberts and I-15.

Southbound traffic is being detoured from I-15 to Idaho 48 in Roberts and then from Idaho 48 to U.S. 20 in Rigby, then south to I-15 in Idaho Falls.

The transportation department estimates the interstate will reopen tomorrow morning, when the wind is expected to subside. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning until 11 p.m. tonight, forecasting southwest to west winds will increase to 35 mph, with gusts of 45 mph before noon, followed by a sharp increase to 40 to 50 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph possible with the frontal passage this afternoon.

Motorists should drive with extreme care and observe traffic signs and signals. High winds create highly dangerous driving conditions. Drivers are encouraged to visit 511.idaho.gov or call 5-1-1 for the latest highway conditions.
