The 29-year-old Fister went 14-9 with a 3.67 ERA in his third season with the Tigers.  Detroit will save about $6 million by dealing Fister, but general manager Dave Dombrowski insists the trade was not done to save money.

“It gives us some flexibility for some other things we want to do,” he said.

Fister will replace Dan Haren in Washington’s rotation, and joins a starting five that includes Stephen Strasberg, Jordan Zimmerman, Gio Gonzalez, and Ross Detwiler.

“This is an exciting day for the Washington Nationals,” said Washington GM Mike Rizzo in a statement. “We feel we’ve added a talented, young veteran to our starting pitching corps. Doug is battle-tested through playoff experiences, and the depth he brings to our staff is exceptional. We are thrilled to welcome him aboard.”
