Adults often use the beginning of a new year as a reason to set lofty goals, like losing weight or quitting smoking. Doctor Kate Eshleman, a child psychologist at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital says that there’s nothing wrong with children following suit. “It’s always a good idea to start healthy habits and healthy behaviors,” Eshleman said. “Certainly, if kids are interested in engaging in resolutions or if families want to start them together, it can be a great idea.”

Eshleman said that parents should encourage children to set resolutions if they are considering doing so, and that parents can also help children decide what types of resolutions to set. “It depends very much on the family and what they’re into,” says Eshleman.

Among possible resolutions for children, Eshleman suggested getting healthier and more active, donating items or getting involved in the community.
