(SAN DIEGO) — The San Diego Padres and free agent reliever Joaquin Benoit officially completed a two-year contract on Saturday, with a vesting option for the 2016 season. Both sides agreed to the deal on Dec. 18, pending a physical.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Joaquin has proven to be one of the top late-game relievers in baseball,” Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said in a released statement. “We are excited to add him to our staff.”
The 36-year-old Benoit spent the previous three seasons with the Tigers. Last year in 66 appearances, he went 4-1 with 24 saves and a 2.01 ERA. He struck out 73 batters in 67 innings of work.
