Patriots’ Belichick Thinks Workout Limits Are Causing More Injuries

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1388072688208Jim Rogash/Getty Images(ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.) — Over the years, there seems to be a rise in injuries around the NFL, and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick thinks the recently instituted offseason workouts and practice limits are the cause.

Belichick was referring to the new rules negotiated in the NFL’s CBA back in 2011.

“Personally, I think that’s taking the wrong approach,” he said. “You have a gap between preparation and competition level. And I think that’s where you see a lot of injuries occurring. We get a lot of breakdowns. We get a lot of situations that players just aren’t as prepared as they were in previous years, in my experience anyway.”

Teams are now prevented from holding two-a-day practices during training camp, as well as limits on padded practices during the regular season. Offseason team activity times were reduced from 14 weeks to nine weeks (10 weeks if the team underwent a head coaching change).

The Patriots have placed six players on the injured reserve list this season.
