(NEW YORK) — Kirk Cousins will start against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Robert Griffin III has been benched.
The Redskins (3-10) fell to the Chiefs 45-10 last Sunday and head coach Mike Shanahan hinted at benching Griffin III for the last three games on Monday to preserve his health.
“I think the risk is too great. I don’t want him going to his third year on IR,” Shanahan said on Wednesday. “We’re in here to win games, but I’m going to do the right thing.”
Griffin III was selected as the no. 2 overall pick in 2012, while Cousins was selected in the fourth round.
“Robert is the franchise quarterback here. This is his team,” Cousins said. “My job is to help this team get a win.”
The franchise quarterback has been sacked 24 times in the last five games.
“I expressed my desire to play,” Griffin III said of the meeting with Shanahan. “At the end of the day coach’s decision is what we go with.”
