On Dec. 7, the company tweeted a picture of its cheerful, O-shaped pasta mascot waving the American flag, complete with the caption, “Take a moment to remember #PearlHarbor with us.”

The tweet immediately fell victim to an online snark attack, with the mascot Photoshopped in all manner of inappropriate places, from the bridge of a bombed battleship in Pearl Harbor to the flag raising at Iwo Jima.

As comic and serial tweeter Patton Oswalt put it, “Thank you, @SpaghettiOs. Thank you, photoshoppers. And God bless tone-deaf, Tweeting corporate interns everywhere.”

After being savaged for hours, Campbell deleted the tweet, replacing it with, “We apologize for our recent tweet in remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day. We meant to pay respect, not to offend.”

Back in September, AT&T was forced to apologize for a 9/11-themed tweet that showed a hand taking a cellphone picture of the “Tribute in Light” at Ground Zero in New York City.
