Michigan State (19-2, 8-1 Big Ten), which played without starters Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson, received 16 points from Keith Appling and 11 points and 12 boards from Matt Costello, helping the Spartans avoid losing their second straight.

Roy Devyn Marble scored 21 points for Iowa (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten) but missed what would have been the game-winning floater as time expired in regulation.

In overtime, Appling and Russell Byrd both sank 3-pointers, with Byrd’s giving the Spartans a six point lead with 33 seconds remaining. Iowa fought back and cut the lead to two, but Mike Gessell missed the tying layup at the buzzer securing the win for Michigan State.
