(IDAHO FALLS, ID) – Bonneville County’s court system has been clogged with misdemeanor cases, resulting in a significant backlog. Officials say at one point recently, there were over 100 cases for offenses ranging form trespassing to drunk driving that couldn’t be handled because there wasn’t enough public defenders available to cover the court dates. The county recently took on two new attorneys to help alleviate the problem, and now there are about 60 cases awaiting trial. They say most of the suspects ultimately avoid trials by making plea bargains.
