Bacteria Killing Bighorn Sheep

(JACKSON, WY) – Wyoming game wardens say an unidentified type of bacteria may be slowing wiping out bighorn sheep in Jackson Hole. Officials rounded up six sheep Sunday morning at the National Elk Refuge for testing and later released them. Biologists hope their samples will shed light on why half the animals were wiped out by pneumonia in 2001, and another 30 percent died three years ago. Each of the captured sheep were radio collared, which will help wardens track their movements throughout the year.
