Ripken was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007 and joined ABC Sports Radio on Wednesday to discuss the new replay system in place for 2014.

“I’ve always been a big advocate of it,” Ripken said.  “I’m not sure a challenge system is one I advocate, but it makes sense to me, especially in the playoffs.”

Major League Baseball announced it had approved a new protective cap for pitchers this week and Ripken said he’s all for safety. “It’s good that the league is looking into it,” the 19-time All-Star said.  “I also like the fact that it’s an option.”

“Pitchers might not feel comfortable wearing something much heavier on their head. I’m glad that they’re experimenting and they are trying it,” he continued.

Ripken was also asked about what baseball should do as more members of the steroid-era become eligible for Cooperstown.

“I’m glad I’m not sitting in the seats where you evaluate or judge someone’s career,” he said.  “It seems clear that the messages the voters are sending right now is they’re going to be cautious about awarding someone to the hall of fame.”
