In addition to the salary relief the Bulls receive by taking on Bynum’s deal, they also secured valuable draft picks. Chicago received a future first-round pick, two future second-round picks, and the ability to swap draft positions with the Cavaliers in 2015 as long as Cleveland picks outside the top-14.

For the Cavaliers, they have upgraded their team in an area they desperately needed. In his tenth NBA season, the 28-year-old Deng is averaging 19.0 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. Aside from his offensive ability, Deng is a tremendous defender as well.

“We have great respect for Luol Deng as a player and a person,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman said. “The moves made today will put us in a better position to make the entire roster stronger for the future and to compete for a championship.”

Bynum wore out his welcome quickly in his first season in Cleveland. He was suspended recently for conduct detrimental to the team. He is expected to be waived by the Bulls, and become a free agent.

The Bulls had title aspirations this season, but seem to be hitting the reset button after point guard Derrick Rose suffered yet another season-ending injury earlier in the season.
