(LAS VEGAS) — Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer was chosen to give a keynote speech at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where she unveiled a curated news service called Yahoo News Digest.
Yahoo News Digest is the “perfect cure to ‘TL;DR'” — or “too long; didn’t read,” Mayer said during Tuesday’s keynote speech. The Yahoo chief said much of the Internet’s content is passed over if it’s too overwhelming for the consumer. Yahoo product manager Nick D’Aloisio joined Mayer onstage to introduce the new service.
D’Aloisio, calling Yahoo News Digest the “perfect blend between technology and journalism, said Yahoo News Digest simplifies news and “eliminates the problem of information overload and TL;DR.” Users of the service would be able to get all the “need to know” news of the day through two daily summaries, or digests, receiving one in the morning and one in the evening.
For users who worry they aren’t getting all sides of the most important stories, D’Aloisio said Yahoo New Digest stories are “created from multiple sources to present the essential units of information, known as ‘atoms,'” which vary from visual infographics and maps to financial tickers. All these “atoms,” he says, capture the social pulse and context of any given day’s news stories.
The app is available for free download at the Apple App Store now.
The company recently acquired the start-up Aviate.
“We’re incredibly excited to kick things off today by announcing that we’ve acquired Aviate. As we look to the future of mobile, we believe home screens should be smarter and more personalized,” Mayer said. “Imagine that your phone could deliver the right experience to you at the right time, instead of you having to search for it.
“What if your phone suggested music or map apps when you got in your car? Or fitness apps when you got to the gym or went for a run? Aviate does just that — automatically organizing your apps based on contextual clues, bringing you what you need when you need it,” she said.
Mayer also used Katie Couric and the cast of Saturday Night Live to help roll out other updates and the launch of a brand new tech blog.
