DNC Chair ‘Trails’ Chris Christie in Florida
(MIAMI) -- The pile on Chris Christie project is alive and well this weekend in Florida where the Democratic National Committee has dispatched Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to “trail” the embattled Republican governor around the state as he attends private fundraising events.
What Wasserman Schultz is doing is known in political parlance as “bracketing” (essentially, trying to upstage your opponent on local turf), and the tactic is usually reserved for the thick of an election season. These days, however, apparently scandals count too.
Christie is scooting around the Sunshine State this weekend with Florida Gov. Rick Scott attending Republican Governors Association fundraisers (Christie is the current chairman of the RGA) in Orlando, Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Wasserman Schultz, a Miami-area congresswoman, held her own event in Orlando Saturday morning and has another anti-Christie press conference scheduled in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday afternoon.
These are very much made-for-local-media events complete with a counter-bracketing effort by Florida GOP Chairman Lenny Curry (whose press handler notes that he’s “available via satellite”!) who says it’s “ridiculous that Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is spending her Saturday in her home state determined to create a political sideshow.”
Even so, the Democrats’ effort shows how determined they are to try to make the scandal stick at a time when Christie is meeting with donors who could be crucial to financing his future political ambitions.
