Florida State Erases 18-Point Deficit to Top Auburn in BCS Title Game

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(PASADENA, CA) — Jameis Winston threw a two-yard go-ahead touchdown pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 13 seconds left in the game to lift Florida State to a 34-31 victory over Auburn in the BCS National Championship game Monday night.
While the Seminoles won, early on it appeared they were going to be blown out.
After FSU kicker Roberto Aguayo hit a 35-yard field goal on the team’s first drive, Auburn ripped off 21 unanswered points to take an 18 point lead with 5:01 left in the first half. But on the Seminoles’ next drive, they converted a fake punt on fourth and four from their own 40, keeping the drive alive. Seven plays later, Florida State would score on a three-yard run by Devonta Freeman, allowing FSU to go into halftime down 21-10.
The second half was a back and forth affair. Florida State took their first lead of the game with 4:31 in the fourth quarter when Levonte Whitfield ran back a 100-yard kick return, making the score 27-24.
Auburn answered back on its next drive when running back Tre Mason — who accumulated 237 total yards on the night — ran for a 37-yard touchdown with 1:19 left in the game. But when FSU got the ball back, Winston led the Seminoles on a 80-yard touchdown drive in under a minute to seal the game.
Winston finished the game completing 20-of-35 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns leading Florida State (14-0) to its third national title.
Auburn (12-2) became the first team in BCS championship history to lose after leading by 18 points.
