(NEW YORK) — It can be argued that nothing goes better with a burger and fries than ketchup, but a new study finds it’s not your favorite food topping.
Mayonnaise is number one by a more than two-to-one margin, the data firm Euromonitor found, according to Quartz.
Americans spend over $2 billion on it each year, and less than half of that — $800 million — on ketchup, the research found. Coming in a close third is soy sauce. Barbecue sauce was fourth, followed by hot sauce, and mustard at number six.
What about salsa? Researchers say it’s not a condiment, but a dip. If salsa was factored in, it would surpass ketchup at number two but still be topped by mayo.
