Characterizing the veteran lawmaker as someone who’s betrayed party principles, the Arizona Republican Party censured the 2008 GOP presidential nominee for being “disastrous and harmful”  to both his state and the country.  The resolution was accepted by acclimation at the group’s meeting in Phoenix Saturday.

Although this censure is purely symbolic, its intent is to get McCain to forgo the opportunity for reelection to a sixth term in 2016.

McCain, who didn’t respond to the slight, is considering another run.

However, fellow Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl came to McCain’s defense, saying his colleague’s voting record is “very conservative.”

As for the Arizona Republican Party, Kyl told The Arizona Republic, “I’ve gone to dozens of these meetings and every now and then some wacky resolution gets passed.  But most people realize it does not represent the majority of the vast numbers of Republicans.”
