They say one easy way to avoid a potentially devastating disease such as diabetes is consuming fruits and vegetables loaded with flavonoids.

Aedin Cassidy of University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School and Tim Spector from King’s College London suggest people start with blueberries, celery and grapes, which contain sub-groups of flavonoids called flavones and anthocyanins.

In short, flavones “modulate blood glucose regulation — affecting the risk of type 2 diabetes,” the researchers said.

They made their calculation from observing the blood samples of 2,000 healthy women.  Those that featured flavones had lower insulin resistance.  High resistance makes one a candidate for type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes that is often brought on by poor diet and lack of exercise.

What Cassidy and Spector want to find out next is how much of these compounds are needed to reduce the risk of the disease.
