Petrino takes over for Charlie Strong, who left for the open Texas job and is looking forward to his second stint with the football program.

Petrino coached the Cardinals from 2003 to 2006 and went 41-9 before leaving for the NFL. He returned to the collegiate ranks in 2008 as the head coach of Arkansas, but was fired in 2012 following an accident in which he was injured while riding a motorcycle with his mistress.

“I’ve made mistakes both professionally and personally, something that I’m not going to do again,” Petrino said. “My first mistake was ever leaving Louisville.”

Petrino has 83 career wins at the collegiate level, seven bowl appearances, eight winning seasons, and four 10-win seasons.
