The 47-year-old Pettine takes over for Rob Chudzinski, who was fired after one season at the helm, in which he went 4-12.

Pettine comes over from the Bills, where he served as defensive coordinator under head coach Doug Marrone in 2013. Before Buffalo, he served for four seasons in the same capacity with head coach Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.

Since the Browns came back into the NFL in 1999, they have only been to the post-season once (2002).
