The actors play Louisiana State Police detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, who in the year 2012 revisit a homicide case on which they worked in 1995. The show flips back and forth between 1995 and 2012 to tell the story of the murder investigation.

Michelle Monaghan, Kevin Dunn, Tory Kittles and Michael Potts also star in True Detective, which airs at 9 p.m. Eastern time, before the third-season premiere of Girls. Girls has already been renewed for a fourth season.

If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, you have an incentive to tune in to HBO on Sunday night. The cable network has announced the first trailer for the fourth season of the fantasy drama will air just before True Detective begins.

Both Game of Thrones and Veep return April 6, the same day the new HBO comedy Silicon Valley premieres. Silicon Valley is brought to you by King of the Hill and Beavis and Butt-head creator Mike Judge.

One more HBO programming note: Boardwalk Empire will be back in the fall for a fifth and final season.
