NFL: Extra Point Could Become Obsolete

Speaking with the NFL Network, commissioner Roger Goodell says the league’s competition committee might consider abolishing the extra point attempt in favor of a new scoring system.

“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said. “I believe we had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd [attempts]. So it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”

Goodell says there are a number of proposals on the table, including one in which a touchdown would be worth seven points instead of six. After the touchdown, the team would have the option of attempting for an eighth point, by converting an extra play from scrimmage. But if the team fails, they would be only awarded six points.

The commissioner says there are hurdles to overcome with the potential change as teams might be discouraged “from going for two.”
