Gruden becomes the sixth head coach hired by owner Dan Snyder in his 15 years in Washington.

The Redskins fired Mike Shanahan a day after the season ended and targeted Gruden.

The Bengals made the postseason in all three years that Gruden was offensive coordinator, but failed to get out of the first round.

Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton made a steady improvement under Gruden and has thrown for more than 3,000 yards in each of his first three seasons.

Gruden will now have the chore of helping Robert Griffin III rebound from a difficult season in which he came back from an injury.

The Redskins finished 3-13 this season and were coming off a 10-6 season in 2012 when they captured the NFC East title.
