“The New York Giants are a great organization and I’m proud to have been part of it for so long,” Jacobs said in a statement. “I love my coaches and my teammates and will miss them as well as the game itself but I am healing well from my surgery and I look forward to running around with my kids for years to come.”

A fourth-round pick by the New York Giants back in 2005, Jacobs was a key member of both of the team’s Super Bowl championship runs.

Jacobs spent eight of his nine seasons with the Giants, the other being a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers. His best season came back in 2008 when he rushed for 1,089 yards and scored 15 touchdowns.

The Giants signed Jacobs during the 2013 season because the team was in desperate need of a veteran back.

In his final season, Jacobs ran for 238 yards and scored four touchdowns.
