Scam Alert: Email Requesting Court Appearance Is Actually a Virus

Obtained by ABC News(NEW YORK) -- If you see an email instructing you to appear in court there's a good chance it's a scam.

The bogus emails percolating around the country, and first noticed around the holidays, are typically signed by someone claiming to be the clerk of a local court. They also contain an attachment that, when opened, unleashes a virus.

“This is not the way we do business, also not the way other courts do business," said Ron Younkins, New York State’s director of court administration.

"Sometimes people in New York are getting notices to appear in other states and people in other states are getting similar notices," Younkins said.

Appearance notifications are generally not sent by email.

The recipients seem to be arbitrary.
