Service companies expanded at a slightly slower pace in December as sales dipped, and new orders plunged to a four-year low. But factory orders rose 1.8 percent in November, with aircraft manufacturing leading the way.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 45 points to close at 16,425. The Nasdaq Composite closed down 18 points at 4,113.68. The S&P 500 closed off 4.6 points at 1,826.77.

The extreme cold in much of the country is having an impact on the economy. Some airline shares dropped after mounting flight cancellations.
