Surgeon General Adds to List of Smoking-Related Diseases

Wavebreakmedia Ltd/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) -- Since 1964, we've known cigarettes can cause lung cancer and kill you in other ways, thanks to Surgeon General Luther Terry.  But now, more diseases are being added to the list.

A new report by acting Surgeon General Boris Lushniak adds Type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction, and liver and colorectal cancer, among others, to the list of maladies caused by cigarettes.

And while the number of Americans who smoke has plunged dramatically in 50 years, nearly half a million people will die from smoking-related diseases this year, the report finds.
