“I’m really excited to be the new head coach of the Houston Texans,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien spent the last two seasons at Penn State, taking over a football program that had been tarnished by the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. During his time in Happy Valley, O’Brien led the Nittany Lions to a 15-9 record despite the program having a bowl ban and transfer rules that allowed players to leave Penn State immediately.

“I want to thank Penn State for the opportunity they gave me to be their head football coach,” O’Brien said. “From the day we walked in the door at Penn State the players at Penn State did everything we asked them to do and I respect them for that.

O’Brien said Friday that he looks forward to evaluating each player on tape before mini-camp begins. He added that he’s already thinking about building a strong coaching staff. “We’ll put together a staff of great teachers, demanding coaches,” O’Brien said, who will meet with the current staff on Saturday. “We’ll put together a staff of coaches that have a passion football, that are good family men.”

Former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips told the Houston Chronicle that he’d like an opportunity to be on O’Brien’s staff.

The Texans finished last season with a 2-14 record and have the first pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
