Various NHL Olympians Tell Their Families Not to Travel to Sochi

Feng Li/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — With growing concern over safety in Sochi for the upcoming Winter Olympics, numerous NHL players who will represent their respective countries in the upcoming games are advising their families to stay home then travel with them to Russia.
Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter, a member of Team USA, has told his family not to come to Sochi.
“You hear all these stories about different things, and it’s definitely a concern,” Suter said. “But at the same time, I feel that the U.S. government and the Russian government is going to do everything in their power to protect us.”
His teammate, Zach Parise, who will also suit up for the United States also feels concern for his family.
“It’s nerve-wracking, that’s for sure. I guess there’s no way around it,” Parise said. “I watch the news. I see that stuff going on. It’s not very comforting.”
The pair of Wild starts aren’t the only NHL players with safety concerns. Vancouver Canucks teammates Roberto Luongo (Canada) and Daniel Sedin (Sweeden) have both asked their families not to travel to Sochi.
Meanwhile, Chicago Blackhawks teammates Patrick Kane (USA) and Jonathan Toews (Canada) are aware of the safety concerns, but will still have members of their families in attendance for the upcoming games.
