Yankees Designate Vernon Wells

Rob Carr/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The New York Yankees designated outfielder Vernon Wells for assignment on Friday, reports ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney.

Wells was brought in last season to fill a void in the outfield and batted .300 in April.

Following the good start, Wells struggled throughout the season at the plate and finished batting .233 and hit one homer after May 15.

"Thank you @Yankees for the opportunity to be a part of such a storied franchise. #Blessed#NextChapter", Wells tweeted following the news.

The Yankees signed Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury in the offseason to provide some depth in the outfield and by designating Wells, it creates space on the 40-man roster.
