Calif. State Senator Indicted on Corruption Charges Involving Film Studio

iStock/Thinkstock(LOS ANGELES) — California State Sen. Ron Calderon has been indicted on political corruption charges. Federal investigators announced the charges Friday, saying the Los Angeles-area politician took money and accepted trips and meals in return for legislative favors.
“Ron Calderon allegedly solicited and accepted approximately $100,000 in cash bribes, as well as plane trips, gourmet dinners and trips to golf resorts,” U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte said, adding that Calderon accepted the money from undercover FBI agents posing at Hollywood film associates.
Wire fraud, bribery, money laundering and aiding in the filing of false tax returns are among the charges in the 24-count indictment against the 56-year-old California state senator.
Along with Sen. Calderon, his older brother Tom is facing similar charges that include money laundering. He surrendered Friday morning.
Calderon has agreed to surrender to federal authorities on Monday morning and will be arraigned that afternoon. If convicted on all 24 charges in the indictment, he faces a maximum 396 years in federal prison.
