Center Jonathan Toews put Canada on the board first at 12:55 into the opening period with an assist from center Jeff Carter and defenseman Shea Weber. Center Sidney Crosby extended the lead at 15:43 into the second period.

Forward Chris Kunitz scored at 9:04 into the third period as Canada wins their ninth Ice Hockey gold medal and their third in the last four Winter Olympics.

Goaltender Carey Price stopped all 24 shots he faced. Canada didn’t allow a goal since the first period of the quarterfinals against Latvia, shutting out the United States and Sweden.

Nicklas Backstrom didn’t play after he failed a doping test, according to a Swedish Olympic official. The team believes an allergy medication caused the failed test.
