Canada Dominates Women’s Skiing Slopestyle

Javier Soriano/Getty Images(SOCHI, Russia) — In it’s debut at the Winter Olympics, women’s skiing slopestyle kicked off Day Five with plenty of excitement during the finals. Canada won two medals in the event, bringing home both gold and bronze while the United States earned a silver.
Dara Howell of Canada wowed the crowd in her first run, scoring a 94.20 en route to being crowned Olympic champion. Her teammate, Kim Lamarre, won the bronze medal by posting an 85.00 on her second run.
With their two medals, Canada briefly takes sole possession of the medal count, winning nine so far in Sochi.
The USA also picked up a medal as Devin Logan won silver with an 85.40 to narrowly edge Lamarre. It is the first silver medal of the games for America and the sixth overall.
Despite the excitement of the inaugural event, warm weather made for a somewhat frightening day at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Canadian Yuki Tsubota crashed during her final run and had to be helped off the course on a stretcher.
Conditions such as that have also brought criticism to other events. The snowboarding halfpipe briefly had qualification runs cancelled due to complaints from participants before Olympic officials chose to continue with the event as planned.
