(BOISE, ID) – Four lesbian couples challenging Idaho’s ban on same-sex marriage have asked a federal judge to bypass a trial and rule in their favor. The plaintiffs contend that recent federal rulings in other states are sufficient to invalidate Idaho’s voter-approved constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman. Governor Butch Otter counters that the decision to define marriage ought to be left up to the states.  Seventeen states and the District of Columbia now allow same-sex marriages.
