Cubs Sign RHP Hammel and McDonald to One-Year Contracts

Zoonar/Thinkstock(CHICAGO) — The Chicago Cubs agreed to one-year contracts with right-handed pitchers Jason Hammel and James McDonald on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Hammel spent the past two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, where he compiled a record of 15-14 with a 4.27 ERA in 46 appearances, including 43 starts. The 31-year-old struck out 209 batters in 257 1-3 innings of work with the O’s.
McDonald comes over from the Pittsburgh Pirates, going 27-24 with a 4.21 ERA in 77 starts with one appearance out of the bullpen. The 29-year-old had 379 strikeouts in 435 2-3 innings with the Bucs.
The Cubs finished the 2013 campaign with a 66-96 record, 31 games behind the National League Central division winner, the St. Louis Cardinals.
