“I’m doing this for the love of the game. I’ve made money. The Atlantic League doesn’t have salaries like the major leagues. So this is a kid who’s trying to fulfill his dream. This isn’t a gimmick. I’ve played baseball. I know the game of baseball. And I’m going after what I’ve always wanted to do,” he told ESPN.com.

A seven-time All-Star, the 34-year-old McGrady plans to pitch for the Sugarland Skeeters of the independent league.

“Just to have a tryout for a minor league team is more fulfilling than anything I can imagine as far as baseball,” McGrady said. “I’m just going to train as hard as I can and pursue my dream. Where this takes me, I don’t know.”

McGrady, spent 15 years in the NBA, playing for the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, and San Antonio Spurs.

During his career, he led the NBA in scoring twice, and finished his career averaging 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
