GETTY 022014 BigCello? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1392952935675iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — The classical cello is certainly not your typical example of head-banging material — Until now.

Two Croatian cellists, Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser, known as 2CELLOS, are breaking the musical mold by merging different genres to create refreshing new covers of iconic pop songs such as Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Californication.”

Most recently they’ve taken the Internet by storm with their hardcore, heart-pounding version of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” amassing nearly 60,000 views since just Wednesday.

“We always try to put our own spin on it, do something different with the song and present it to the people in a new and fresh way,” 2CELLOS wrote to ABC’s Good Morning America. “We try to add an extra classical dimension to those well-known evergreens through our cellos.”

Both Sulic, 26, and Hauser, 27, have played the classical instrument since childhood and were considered to be “the biggest rivals.” That’s why, Hauser explained, “everyone was surprised when we joined forces.”

They’ve been playing together for three years, and in that short amount of time they’ve already toured with Elton John, performed on the TV series Glee, and collaborated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age and George Michael.

“We cover songs that we love and we play music that we are passionate about, these songs have to mean something to us, and of course, they have to sound great on the cello,” said Hauser.
